Geography

Moscow is situated in the center of the East European Plain on the banks of the Moskva River. The city's highest point is Teplostan Upland, at 255 meters above sea level, with an average elevation of around 156 meters. Historically, its location in the center of Russian lands and on the Moskva River, a tributary of the Volga, made it a key trading and political center. Moscow's width from west to east is 39.7 km, and its length from north to south is 51.8 km.

Population
The population of the city of Moscow is approximately 13 million people, while the urban and metropolitan areas are larger, with over 19 million and 21.5 million residents, respectively.

Moscow is today one of the safest cities in the world, safer than European capitals like Paris, London, Berlin and the largest USA cities. It is not anyhow affected by the conflict in Ukraine. Though flight delays related to drone warnings happen in the airports few times per month in average. Then it is recommended to arrange your flight so that the arrival date is 1-2 days before the conference.

Language
The official and most widely spoken language in Moscow is Russian. Russian is a Slavic language and uses the Cyrillic alphabet. Some people in tourist areas or the younger generation may speak English and written notes in Chinese can be found in tourists shops or the city landmarks.

Economy
The economy of the Moscow metropolitan area is one of the five largest in the world. The GDP of the Moscow metropolitan area measured by purchasing power parity at the end of 2020 exceeded 1 trillion US dollars. According to Euromonitor, the Moscow metropolitan area ranks fifth in the world in terms of GDP.
